"One of the first assignments I give to my students after their first six weeks at Madison is to have them go out and watch God's light cues and have them record a sunset. They do it not in color, but look at it rather in terms of layers. I make them go around the parking lots and stores and industrial complexes to look at how lighting is designed."

The United States Institute of Theater Technicians hosts an annual conference for performing arts and entertainment professionals, offering more than 175 sessions featuring topics on design, technology, costume, sound, architecture, management, engineering and production. Held in a different North American city each year, the conference attracts over 3,800 attendees world-wide who share their knowledge and expertise with one another. Because it is the largest annual gathering of people involved in technical theater and an incredible source of education for anyone in the field, The Hemsley Lighting Programs began presenting educational seminars at this conference in 2002 as a means of furthering Gilbert's teaching legacy. As this conference is also attended by students interviewing for jobs and graduate study programs, it is a wonderful opportunity to communicate information about the Internship, Master Classes and Portfolio Review to college and university representatives as well as aspiring lighting designers, either beginning or completing their studies.
